HOW IELTS OPENED THE DOORS TO MY DREAMS

When I started studying for IELTS, I didn’t see it as anything other than another test I needed to study for and pass to reach my dreams. Looking back now, I realise that IELTS is so much more than that. It became one of the doors that helped me move closer to my dreams. Of course, I was nervous at first. Anyone would be. The mere mention of it, “IELTS”, is quite daunting. To me, listening, reading, writing, and speaking all felt like four different challenges waiting to expose every mistake I could make. I recall thinking, what if I forget my words? What if I run out of time? What if I don’t get the score I need?

However, the more I studied for the test, the more I realised that IELTS is not merely a means to evaluate my proficiency in English; rather, it was also training me for real life. It became a tool that helps me grow and develop skills that will benefit me academically, professionally and socially.

Through writing, I discovered how to organise my thoughts instead of letting them run around everywhere. It taught me that good writing is not about using the biggest words in the dictionary, but about making your ideas clear, and honestly, it helps a lot during exam season. By reading, I became patient, focused and was able to find strategies to deal with complex information without losing my cool, which helps a lot now that I’m in college. Through listening, I grew to be persistent, attentive and knowledgeable in various topics. Finally, through speaking—which admittedly was the scariest part for me—I learned that I do not have to be perfect to be understood– all I have to do is be courageous enough to talk and express myself, which helped me build connections with people from diverse backgrounds and cultures.

What IELTS has taught me is that confidence is gained; it isn't something that everyone automatically has. At times, confidence grows while you are preparing and developing your ability to accept your mistakes. At times, confidence grows as you continue to try again and again until you are confident in showing yourself that you are capable.

This is also the message I want to share in my videos. I know many people become fearful when preparing for the IELTS exam. A great number of people feel as though they are unprepared. Many overthink and worry that their English isn’t sufficient. Some are hesitating to take the IELTS test due to the enormity of their fears and doubts, which usually outweigh the dream. Honestly, I’m familiar with that feeling – I’ve experienced it too, I’ve been there.

However, IELTS opened up new opportunities for me because I chose to give it a go, regardless of everything else, and it also gave me a higher level of self-assurance regarding my abilities. Being appointed as an IELTS Ambassador made me realise that my journey was not just something I experienced for myself. It became something I could share with others, especially those who are still doubting themselves. I want people to see IELTS not only as a requirement but as a bridge to pursuing their dreams and desires, rather than solely viewing it as an obligation, requirement, or test that needs to be passed.

My advice for those who are preparing for the IELTS test today is quite simple: do not wait until you feel completely ready. Start where you are, read books or articles every once in a while, write an essay, and listen to podcasts and interviews more. Speak even if your voice shakes. Make mistakes, learn from them, and keep going.

IELTS opened doors to my dreams, but before it opened those doors, it opened something inside me first — courage. It taught me that fear does not mean you are not capable. Sometimes, fear is just part of the climb.

So if you are looking for a sign to start, consider this one.

Prepare and believe in your progress. IELTS is more than just a test. It can be the beginning of the dream you once thought was too far away. So don’t let your doubts and fears take the wheel, seize control and have a go at it. And like I always say, turn your fear into growth, and never be afraid to try.
